Tom King Bows Out of Wonder Woman as His Run Ends With Issue #40
Tom King's run on Wonder Woman is coming to a close. The writer and artist Daniel Sampere will wrap their collaboration with issue #40, releasing December 16, 2026 — sending Diana and her family home to Themyscira for a final showdown with the Matriarch and the Sovereign in an arc titled "Wonder War."
King has been candid that the ending is arriving earlier than planned. He originally envisioned the run stretching to 100 issues, but says his schedule outside of comics — including his work on DC's Lanterns — made that pace impossible to sustain. Even so, he's called himself "incredibly happy and joyous" with where the story lands, framing the finale as the payoff of a theme he's been building since issue #1: Diana's struggle to reconcile being a warrior with her mission of peace.
The finale features Sampere on interiors and main cover, backed by variants from David Nakayama, Julian Totino Tedesco, and Jamie Hewlett. DC hasn't announced who picks up the ongoing series after #40, so expect more news on Wonder Woman's next creative team before the year is out.
