Marvel's Burbank Relocation Deadline Passes, Leaving Tom Brevoort's Future Unclear

September 15 was the deadline for Marvel Comics' New York-based publishing staff to decide whether to relocate to Burbank, California, alongside Marvel Studios and the rest of Disney's West Coast operations, or part ways with the company. The deadline is the first concrete milestone in a relocation plan Marvel set in motion back in July, when it named Steve Wacker as its new Editor-in-Chief following C.B. Cebulski's departure and confirmed that comics publishing would eventually move out of New York entirely, with a physical office change targeted for 2027.

VP of Licensed Publishing Sven Larsen has already confirmed he's making the cross-country move. Less clear is what happens to some of the imprint's longest-tenured editorial names: Executive Editor and SVP Tom Brevoort, a fixture of Marvel's New York bullpen for more than three decades, along with VP Nick Lowe, Senior Editor Wil Moss, and SVP David Bogart, have not said publicly whether they're headed west or headed for the door.

It's more than an office address changing. Marvel's New York staff represents an enormous amount of institutional memory built up over decades of continuity, creator relationships, and editorial process, and how much of that survives the move could shape the books themselves for years to come. Industry watchers have started framing this as a symbolic turning point for the medium, since New York has functioned as the comics industry's home base for the better part of a century.

Expect more names to surface in the coming weeks as departures and relocations are confirmed one by one.
