Marvel Unveils Midnight Universe With a Five-Cover Variant System

Marvel is launching a new horror-tinged imprint called Midnight Universe, and it's rolling out with three #1 issues on October 7: Midnight Spider-Man from Phillip Kennedy Johnson and ScieTronc, Midnight Fantastic Four from Benjamin Percy and Kev Walker, and Midnight X-Men from Jonathan Hickman and Matteo Della Fonte.

What sets this line apart is the variant structure built around it from day one. Each series gets five recurring cover slots — a main "Cloaked Midnight" design, a blood-soaked horror cover, a spotlight cover reimagining classic heroes through the Midnight lens, a cover drawing on classic horror imagery, and a prestige painted edition — plus additional one-off variants layered on top.

Standardizing the lineup across three different launches is a notable move for Marvel; it gives collectors a consistent way to chase a specific look (say, always going for the "E" cover) across an entire line rather than hunting down each book's variants individually. With three heavy-hitter creative teams attached, expect early sellouts on at least a few of these.
