Marvel Reveals David Colton as the New Miracleman, Officially Joining the Avengers

Avengers: Armageddon #4 dropped the reveal Marvel's been building toward all summer: David Colton, the 21st-century successor to Captain America introduced during Chip Zdarsky's run, is the new Miracleman. After being exposed to the Origin Box at the heart of the event's central mystery, Colton comes out the other side transformed, with the penultimate issue framing it as less an ending than an origin story restarting from zero.

Miracleman's history is almost as complicated as the character himself, a decades-long rights saga that kept the Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman-era stories tied up for years before Marvel finally reacquired and began republishing them. Folding a new version of the character directly into Avengers continuity is a bigger swing than a cameo or crossover would suggest, and editor Wil Moss has already teased "big implications" reaching well past the Avengers roster and into the wider Marvel Universe.

Issue #5 closes out the event with Ario Anindito joining Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar on art, and sets the stage for Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto's new ongoing Avengers #1, launching in November. Expect Colton's new status quo to be front and center when that book kicks off.
