Absolute Cassandra Cain Reveals Its Joker Was Hiding in the League of Assassins All Along
DC's Absolute Universe line picked up a new piece of connective tissue this week with Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow's Hand #1, a one-shot from writer Che Grayson and artist Matías Bergara built to bridge the gap between Absolute Catwoman #3 and #4. In this corner of the line, Cass isn't the gentle, code-following Batgirl readers know from the mainstream universe — she's a killer trained from childhood by Lady Shiva inside a rebuilt League of Assassins. What survives the reinvention is her core gift: reading bodies and intent better than anyone else alive, even after violence becomes her whole world.
The issue's origin flashback is the real hook. Cass loses her voice at twelve after an explosion, and not long after, the League of Assassins is slaughtered by one of its own — a member named Jack Grimm who turns out to be this universe's Joker, snapping after his demands go unanswered. Shiva survives the massacre and rebuilds the League around her daughter, grooming Cass into its greatest weapon. Their eventual showdown doesn't end the way that setup implies: Cass beats her mother in single combat, then chooses mercy, and the two set about reshaping the organization into something closer to a League of Shadows than a house of assassins.
The one-shot also spends time on Absolute David Cain, who — unlike his cold, purely transactional mainstream counterpart — shows real concern for his daughter's welfare, plus a first look at an Absolute version of Bronze Tiger whose role the story keeps under wraps for now. Coming on the heels of Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and this line's other reworked corners, it's another sign DC is treating the Absolute Universe's connective one-shots as more than filler — they're where the line's biggest identity swaps actually get explained.
